Sorting out the financial affairs of a loved one whilst your grieving can be difficult.

Our team are happy to talk it all through if anything isn't clear. There are also lots of charities and support organisations on hand to help you every step of the way.

Get in touch if you need any help or support.

First steps

Register the death

To do this, you'll need a medical certificate from the hospital, GP or coroner.

Make an appointment with your local Register Office to register the death

You'll  then receive a copy of the death certificate.

Find their will

The will may help you better understand what you need to do next as it may have details about funeral arrangements and will name an executor.

Don't worry if there is no will in place. You can still get in touch with us.

Let us know

Choose how you'd prefer to tell us that someone has died.

You can do this online or by calling us.

We'll help you though each step. You don't need to have any documents available when you first get in touch.

Useful things to know

Funeral costs

When organising the funeral, some companies will require money at the time of making arrangements. Let us know if you need access to funds in your loved ones account and we can make a payment from the account direct to the funeral directors.

Nominations

Members can nominate someone to receive their savings in the event of their death. There are strict rules in place for Nominations and it only covers up to £5000 in savings. We’ll let you know if there is a Nomination in place.

Loan and Savings Insurance

The credit union has a group life insurance policy for members’ savings and loans (mortgages are not protected). This may pay an additional benefit based on your loved one’s circumstances. There are exclusions in place and some members and accounts are excluded from the benefit. We can discuss this with you and you can decide if you wish us to consider making a claim on this group policy.

Confirmation

This is the legal process that says who can deal with the proceeds of a deceased person’s estate. The person who applies to legally administer the estate is called the executor or sometimes known as personal representative. A Grant of Confirmation is the legal document issued by the sheriff court. We may not need to see this, it will depend on the products and services held with us and your loved one’s circumstances.
