We have been crowned the UK’s Best Consumer Facing Social Enterprise Award at the 15th Social Enterprise Awards, held at LSO St Luke’s in London. The Awards attracted more than 500 applicants in 12 categories, with the finalists representing the top 50 social enterprises in the UK.
In the Consumer Facing social enterprise category, the credit union was up against some strong competition, including The Big Issue, Belu Water and Divine Chocolate.
The UK now has more than 70,000 social enterprises. These businesses, with a social mission, contribute more than £24 billion to the UK economy each year.
Social enterprises are businesses changing the world for the better. They are businesses that trade to tackle social problems, aim to improve communities, people’s lives or the environment. Society profits when they profit.
Peter Holbrook, chief executive of Social Enterprise UK said, “Glasgow Credit Union was up against some of social enterprise sector’s biggest brands. They impressed the judges and are a very worthy winner. Their business is growing and as a result, they’re helping increasing numbers of people who need their financial services.”
This award adds to our growing list which includes the Scottish Business of the Year 2013 at the ASB Awards and the winner of Glasgow’s Favourite Business at the Glasgow Business Awards.
It rounds off an incredible year for the credit union, as we’ve just rewarded our 32,000+ members with a bumper £2.5million payout. This amounted to a 10% interest rebate on unsecured loans repaid and a 2.5% dividend on members’ easy access savings accounts. Both the interest rebate and the dividend are our way of sharing our success with our members.

Glasgow Credit Union Chief Executive June Walker said “Being crowned the UK’s Best Consumer Facing Social Enterprise is a tremendous accolade, particularly as we were up against some really strong competition in our category. Winning this award comes at the tail end of a fantastic year for the credit union. We’ve launched new loans and mortgage products in response to member needs and we’re now in the position where 1 in every 20 Glaswegians is a member of this organisation. It’s a rewarding feeling to know that we’re helping consumers manage their finances, providing low cost loans when they need them and offering a great return on savings.”
