A proud history and a bright future

29th July 2014

Glasgow Credit Union celebrates our 25th Anniversary this year and we thought a good way to mark the occasion would be to speak to some of our founding members.  It might surprise you to find out that there are around 300 members who joined back in 1989 and who are still members today!  We asked these members to share their stories of the early days of Glasgow Credit Union, and of what our organisation means to them.  Here’s just a few of the responses we received:

‘…from that day to this the people have been great, the service fantastic and the accessibility to finances is a much more relaxed and less intrusive service than a bank.  I think it’s safe to say that most people feel like the credit union is ‘our’ bank and it is great to see how the Glasgow Credit Union has developed over the years.’  Alex Rizza

‘I continually return to Glasgow Credit Union for loans and savings as you will not a better deal anywhere else with high street banking.’  Mick Lee

‘In 1989 I was young, and had no inclination to save if it meant having to physically put money away myself. With the credit union it came direct from my salary and wasn’t missed the same.  Now I’ve got a 12 year old son and I talk to him about Glasgow Credit Union.  I make him aware of the importance of saving.’  Angie Simpson

‘…the real reason for Glasgow Credit Union’s success is the members – old and new – who continue to bring their business year after year, and help spread the mutual, ethical message.’  Kenny Gormal

‘The idea of saving directly from my pay really appealed to me and I can honestly say that if it hadn’t been for the credit union I would not be the saver I am today.’  David Shields

‘Although none of us can predict the future, I think it is fair to say that the services Glasgow Credit Union provides will be as appreciated in the next twenty-five years as they undoubtedly have been since it was formed 1989.’  Gordon Craig
